This course is intended to help all instructors that teach roof
framing by adding to and enhancing their working knowledge of rafters. While
the focus of the class is to teach the basics of unequal pitch roof framing, it
will include basic math concepts associated with calculating many kinds of
rafters including unequal pitch rafters. Students will develop drawings to
clarify rafter intersections, plan views to help calculate unequal pitch hip
rafters, and comparative pitch drawings to accurately determine rafter heel
height, or height above plate. Construction Master Pro calculators will be
used. Shop exercises will include calculating, laying out, and installing
rafters for unequal pitch gable roofs both without and with an overhang,
unequal pitch hip roofs both without and with an overhang, jacks, and valleys.
Safety in the shop is stressed. The class adds to the instructor’s overall
knowledge of roof framing by providing insight, resources, and reference
materials to increase his/her comfort level with many types of rafter framing.
